DIY: Muffin Tin Crayons

This tutorial from Kaboose's blog couldn't be easier, more fun, or cheaper!  Three things that we just love in any craft.

What you'll need:

  • Cupcake/muffin tin
  • Non-toxic broken crayons
  • Vegetable oil
  • toothpick

How to make it:

  1. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F.
  2. Remove all the paper labels from crayon pieces. (Please check to make sure they are non-toxic crayons.)
  3. Put ¼ teaspoon of vegetable oil into each muffin pan cup, no cup liners needed.
  4. You will use the equivalent of 4 new crayons for each cup. Place broken crayons (no longer than an inch each) into the muffin pan. This will fill the cup about 1/3 full.
  5. Place into the preheated oven and watch carefully, they melt quickly!
  6. Bake crayons for 8 minutes or so.
  7. When the crayons begin to melt, remove them from the oven and stir gently with a toothpick.
  8. Crayon will look “ugly” and the colors may appear blended too much. Don’t worry! They look much better on the other side.
  9. Let the crayons cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, pop the crayons out of the muffin pan by tapping on the backside of the pan. Crayons should fall right out.

Tips:

  • If you have any new crayons available, use one as a measuring stick. Lay broken crayon pieces along side of the new crayon to measure out 4 full sized crayons. This is how many you will need for each completed chunky crayon.
  • Be sure to use extreme caution around kitchen utensils and the oven. Always use oven mitts and do not stick you fingers into the melted crayons.
  • If you don’t have any broken crayon pieces, you can buy a large box of cheap crayons at the Dollar Store.

Ashley let us in on a few of her secrets ....
"After some experimentation I found that the best way to attach the petals was with 'shiny' scotch tape (the type that looks like packing tape) rather than the matte scotch 'magic' tape (which gave obvious seams/shadows that looked less than stellar). The 'petals' were cut in various lengths (I would cut a sheet of wax paper and fold it over several times so I was cutting 8 petals at a time) and attached from the bottom-->up (with shorter petals at the top)...don't be discouraged if you can see a subtle shadow cast by the tape initially as lots and lots and lots of layers are key! The petals curved naturally from the wax paper coming on a roll, and I placed most of them with the curl flipping out. Also, in lieu of wax paper I might use parchment paper for the next go-round as it has a more matte appearance when the light is off."

$1.19 (wax paper)
$0.50 (tape)
$6.00 (23.5" paper lantern from IKEA)
$3.99 (electric cord form IKEA)

DIY: Dollar Store Candle Makeover

We love dollar store shopping, despite its dangerousness since we have ZERO self control in there....

But thanks to Banman Land's blog, we'll have some direction on what we want to buy next time we go!  We love being able to jazz up our dollar store finds, and they've done a wonderful job with these number candles!  So easy, so quick, but so very cute!

Ok, I have revamped a few Dollar Store candles and gotten a lot of questions and comments so I thought I'd talk you all through it.

Here's what Maddie's birthday candle looked like when I bought it.
Kinda predictable.

I grabbed some glittery puff paint
{not to be confused with glitter glue}
I stuck all sorts of cute buttons and tiny rhinestones in the inside of the outline with the puff paint.
{If I hadn't liked the teal outline for my party theme, I would have re-outlined it with my sparkly puff paint)

I let it dry for an hour
{at least}

After it was dry,

I gently stuck a toothpick into the bottom of the candle.

Here's what it looked like when I got finished with it.
{oops, this is BEFORE the toothpick but you can imagine what that would look like, right?}

DIY: Workout Shirt!

Falling behind on that New Year's Resolution for a healthier life?  Want to just hit the gym more often?  Tired of spending money on gym clothes??  Here is a fantastical tutorial from Rabbit Food for My Bunny Teeth that will get you back on track or just more budget friendly!

DIY Workout Shirt
Makes 1 sexy little tank
Ingredients:
1 old T-shirt
1 pair of scissors
20 minutes
1. Start with a pre-washed T-shirt. Any old shirt will do! The bigger the better.
2. Cut away the ribbed neckline and bottom hem. For the sleeves, cut downwards starting from the shoulder, determining how thick you want your straps. Cut straight down and then begin to curve down below the armpit seam.
3. Determine how low you want your front neckline, and cut away.
4. Flip the shirt over and make a narrow racerback, curving inward from the armpits.  Then cut a deep “V” shape from the top neckline.
5. Using the excess bottom hemline, stretch it out until it becomes one long string of fabric. Knot the string a couple of inches above the bottom of the “V” shape.
6. Wrap the string all the way down around the center of the racerback, and back up to meet the other ends. Knot the ends together tightly. Trim the loose ends.
7. To give your tank a high-low look, lay your shirt sideways, flattening it out evenly. Starting a few inches up at the front of your shirt, start cutting diagonally until you reach the back.

T-Shirt “Yarn” Tutorial

Thanks to Gracious Rain's blog we now know how to make T-Shirt Yarn!  Go forth and make beautiful things with it and who us what ya got!

Oh, yeah…it’s cotton “yarn” made from a spiral cut T-shirt.
does everyone on earth have a huge pile of orphan T-shirts that nobody wears, but they can’t seem to part with…
or is it just me?
So let’s get real green and do something useful with some of them…shall we?
Start with a regular t-shirt that has lived a good life…no guilt now. It’s going on to a better place…really.
Cut off the bottom hem.
Now cut the top off just under the sleeves…
so you have a tube of fabric.
Fold it nearly in half, leaving the under side sticking out about an inch.
Now cut from right to left all the way up to and just past the top fabric, but leave the one inch margin of the lower fabric uncut. Repeat about 1 inch apart. Now unfold the fabric…
it should look like this.
The easiest way for you to hold the fabric and cut it into one continuous strip is to slide your arm through the two layers of fabric 1 inch uncut margin running along the top of your arm. I drew dotted lines  showing where you’ll cut your fabric–but you don’t need to draw the lines. You’ll be amazed at how fast you can figure this out and it’s really fun too, and for some reason deeply satisfying.
If you need more instructions click HERE for a sweet little diagram and bag pattern.
When you’re finished cutting, you’ll have one long, long, strip of fabric. Are you ready to make it more “yarn” like? Here goes!
Going down the entire length of your fabric, take a hold of it by one end and gently stretch it. It will magically curl up and behave it’s self just like it should. Very obedient stuff, I tell you.
Next, roll it into a ball and think of the stuff you can knit or crochet or weave with it. I’ve seen trivets, handbags and rugs…

DIY $220 Bracelet for $5

For this cheap, fun and easy bracelet / necklace from Henry Happened's Blog you’ll need:
  • 3 yards of silk ribbon cord. I got mine (purple, of course) at JoAnn’s in the trim section.
  • 2 dozen 8mm gold beads.
Cut the ribbon into 3 equal lengths. Standard bracelet size is 7 inches so you’ll want it about 29 inches long in order to wrap 4 times.
Start by braiding about 6 inches of ribbon and then secure the end with a rubber band. Anchor the end with something heavy to hold in it place.
Start braiding in the beads by feeding the ball onto the middle strand and then tightly braiding the other two strands around it. Don’t pull too hard though or the beads will have a tendency to pop out as you go.
Continue feeding beads onto the middle strand until you run out (I had about 25) or until there’s about 6 inches of ribbon left.
Finish with another 6 inches or so of braiding. Then clamp the ends with ribbon fasteners or just tie it in a knot.
It looks great as a bracelet or a necklace!

DIY Ruffled Ice Cream Cones

Adorable and great for just about any party you could ever want to have!  Check out Icing Designs blog for more fun tutorials!
 Materials:
2 1/2" styrofoam balls
1 1/2 yards of lightweight cotton fabric
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Hot glue gun/glue
Glue
Scrapbook paper
Cone templatea
Polyester stuffing
Ribbon
Pins

Cut fabric into strips about 44" long x 1.5 " wide using pinking shears. Sew down the middle of the strip, ruffling fabric as you go with sewing machine. You can also ruffle the fabric by hand if you do not have a sewing machine. Your finished ruffle should be 8" long. You could also use pre-ruffled fabric or ruffle trim if you do not want to make your own!

Trace cone template onto your paper and cut out. Glue edges to make cone shape. I recommend not using hot glue for this step since you need a bit of extra time to get the edges together just right. Fill your cone with stuffing to help hold the shape.

Cut a circle roughly 8" in diameter out of your fabric. Wrap the fabric around the ball and hot glue to bottom, gathering as you go. Do not worry about how the bottom looks, it will be hidden inside your cone.

Place hot glue around inside edge of your cone and stick the covered styrofoam inside. Hot glue your ruffle around the top of the cone, twisting as you go around. Be sure to glue it to both the paper and the styrofoam ball. If you would like to hang the cones, cut ribbon to desired length and use a pin or hot glue to secure it to your ice cream!
