DIY: Pinhole Cards

The Proper Pinwheel has a great idea for homemade cards.  If you love to add your own personal touch to the cards you give people, this idea is just perfect for you!  You could even jazz up a store card with this method!

Check out their blog for more paper crafting diy!
When I think back, most of my favorite crafts were learned in grade school. Using crayons over watercolor, making art from paper towels, and nap time. Those are some of my fave elementary memories. One of the best skills I learned (and I still use it to this day!), is pricking paper with a pin and creating stationery. So fun. And so easy!
Pinhole stationary has to be one of the best ways to dress up some regular old paper. The font choices are endless, and you can make it as big or as small as you want! Read below for the refresher!
To make your own you’ll need:
  1. cardstock in assorted colors
  2. scissors
  3. tape
  4. safety pin
  5. mirrored image or text
To mirror your text, copy from Word and paste into Paint. Right-click ”Image” and select “Rotate or Flip” and flip yo’ message horizontally. Easy as pie, I tell you. Tape the words to the inside of your card and start pricking with a pin. Outline the text with the pin. Don’t poke holes all over the place. It’s not as pretty looking. Trust me.
Watch some TV while you poke all of the little holes. I did this while watching The Graduate. I don’t know why I thought I would like that movie. I clearly didn’t remember how strange it was. Finish pricking/poking, remove the tape and paper, and…
Bada-bing.
Play around with a few fonts and see what you like! They look pretty cool when held up to the light.

While we realize that the Fourth of July has passed, we feel that this tutorial is so easy and fun it's good to be used year round!  100 Directions shows you how to whip this up in a jiff, and imagine how cute this would look at a baby shower, wedding table, anniversary celebration (gold for the 50 year!), or anything really...maybe we'll just decorate the house in fun summer color just because we can!  What about you...do you love them like we do??

Paper pom pom decor

Materials you need:
  • Crepe paper streamers
  • Ribbon
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors

Step by step instructions to make patriotic pom pom decorations:

  1. Cut cardboard into a rectangle approximately 3″ x 6″. The size of this piece is directly related to how big or small your pom poms can be.
  2. Layer the colors of paper you want to use and wrap around the cardboard at least 7 times. The more you wrap, the thicker your pom pom.
  3. Slide the wrapped paper off the cardboard and tie a ribbon around the middle. Be careful to not tie to tightly to prevent tearing the paper. This ribbon can be used to hang your pom poms later, so make it long enough to tie and hang.
  4. Cut the edges of the paper, first cut the end of the loop and then cut toward the ribbon in strips.
  5. Carefully fluffy the pom pom pieces by gently pulling and moving them around until you get the desired look.

DIY: Rose Petal Salve Tutorial

Love all of those amazing smelling cosmetics at the department store or beauty store in your local mall, but can't afford the price tag that comes with them?  Why not make your own?  Live in Art's blog shows you a simply and budget friendly way of making your own amazing lip salve, which of course can be tweaked for any color or fragrance.  Make one for yourself and one to give to a friend!

Rose Petal Salve: Tutorial

Making rose petal oil is a laborious task, but once it's done, it can be utilized in bath salts, salves, and other wonderful products. The following is a tutorial on how to make rose petal salve, using the  pre-made oil.
Ingredients:
3.5 C. rose hip oil
1.5 C. refined beeswax
1 Capsule Vitamin E
Directions:
  1. Heat the oil in one pan.
  2. Melt beeswax in a separate pan.
  3. Once the beeswax has melted, mix the ingredients together.
  4. Allow it to blend for a few minutes over heat. Add Vitamin E & stir.
  5. Pour the mix into tin cans or small glass jars to cool.
  6. Your rose petal salve is ready to use...and should have a pink tint to it. If not, it's no big deal - it should smell heavenly!

DIY Paper Plate Basket Tutorial

The following directions are based on the craft from Martha Stewart. The tutorial on her site said to hold the basket together with a rubber band. I think that would be cute, but I love love love washi tape so I decided to use that. You can use either method, if you find another way to hold the basket together, please let me know.

1. You will need the following supplies: white paper plates (1 plate per basket), scissors, paper edger scissors (I used my pinking shears), a ruler, pencil, washi tape or rubber bands, and 4 paper clips.

2. Using the paper edger scissors or pinking shears, trim about 1/4″ off of the circumference of the plate.

3. Flip the plate over so the front side is facing down. Use the pencil and ruler to make a 9-section grid. Try your best to make the center square in the center of the plate. If you want you can measure it.

4. Use the regular scissors to cut a slit along every other vertical line. Stop cutting where the vertical line intersects with the center square.

5. Fold one side at a time up to form the “basket”. Use one paper clip to hold each side together as you assemble the basket.

6. Use washi tape and wrap it around the basket and then remove the paper clips. If you are using rubber bands, simple wrap the rubber bands around the basket. And you’re done! Now fill them up with summer treats!
